  SEATTLE PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
May 16th, 2008

We had a minor meltdown while preparing this issue of Seattle Picks for you, dear readers. The problem started with a dear friend: our beloved (and near-constant) sidekick, the laptop.

Refusing to boot up after several attempts and several loud threats on our part, we called the always helpful (ha!) technical support number. Boy, was that fun. We were beginning to panic—we had work to do (and maybe a certain item we wanted to purchase online) and Mr. Technical Support wasn’t having any luck. He tried to explain the problem to us multiple times, but really all we heard was wah-wah-wah-your computer is on the verge of crashing-wah-wah-wah. Finally, after several tedious hours and some serious stress eating on our part, Mr. T worked some kind of computer magic and our baby was back!

However, this little incident has left us less than impressed by technology. We are thinking that maybe next week you should expect your Seattle Picks to arrive by carrier pigeon.

No worries, though, because it’s time for more love from us—forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a $50 gift certificate to www.katiekay.com.

Gardener’s Delight

Last weekend, we leisurely sat on our front porch admiring the freshly mowed, blossoming spring gardens of our neighbors … and then winced when we realized how bad our own greenspace was looking. Although we may not have a green thumb and may kill an innocent houseplant from time to time, now is the season to pick up the trowel and shears and try again!

For the aspiring gardener in all of us, there is a place that is heavenly—City People’s Garden Store. Stroll through the nursery and the greenhouse; collect your plants in a classic red wagon … all the while enjoying the soothing sound of fountains trickling water in the background. In addition to a myriad of plants and gardening supplies, City People’s boasts an eclectic gift department complete with cards, toys, birdhouses, and holiday decor.

Whether you are an all-weather gardener or simply in search of the perfect gift, City People’s is a store that never goes out of season. (Yes, we said it.)

Skin is In

We just hit a major milestone birthday (we will just leave it at that, as a lady never tells her age) and had a skin revelation. While we are still young at heart, we are far too old for acne. So, this birthday, we made a resolution to update our skin regime for a fresh-faced, pimple-free future.

That’s why we felt very mature (in the best sense of the word) when we walked into Skinlogic, a skincare center that is part spa and part dermatologist. Founded on the idea of teaching the skin to be healthier, they provide a wide array of facials and treatments so that everyone can find the right fit. They also feature inexpensive waxing, skin products that are really good for you, and a cosmetics counter with True Protective Mineral Makeup.

We left with glowing skin and a bag full of goodies to point us in the right direction. And we will definitely keep coming back to Skinlogic, even when we hit the “we’re too young for wrinkles” age and then some.

Practically Paris

We do love Seattle, but sometimes (in the dead of winter especially) we fantasize about being somewhere else. We’re sitting in a little French café, sipping café au lait and looking exactly like Audrey Hepburn. Then we open our eyes and we’re still at our desks.

But thanks to Boulangerie Nantaise, it doesn’t have to be a complete fantasy. They have brought a little bit of Paris to us. Decorated like the French café of our dreams, we are transported simply by taking a seat in this lovely Belltown spot. Almost everything is made with 100% organic ingredients, ensuring unsurpassed flavor and quality. Freshly baked breads, croissants and pastries are the focus here, and we dare you to leave without taking a least one loaf home for later, where it will taste just as good, we promise!

For heartier fare, though, be sure to try their lunch specials: delicious sandwiches and rich soups. One bite and we could’ve sworn we heard a street musician playing La Vie En Rose, right here in the Emerald City.

Built to Last

Our very first boyfriend had a vintage Mustang that we fondly remember spending many, many hours in. We can still conjure the feel of those soft fabric seats as we cruised through town at night. This is why, when we found Kim White Handbags, we fell in love—again.

Specializing in bags designed from vintage automotive fabrics, not only are they totally cute, but they’re durable too. Style and function? What more could a girl want?

It’s a Cinch

We once heard that you should always look in the mirror before leaving the house and remove one accessory. This is good advice for people like us: complete accessory fiends. And our latest obsessions are the bright, graphic belts from Obi Design.

Cut and sewn in Portland, no two are exactly alike, and are finished to order with your choice of buckle. We love the Hollywood deco-like print—and this is one accessory we won’t be taking off anytime soon.
