life + style to you: every Friday
June 20th, 2008

Last weekend was graduation day at our alma mater. Thinking back to our college days and growing nostalgic for times gone by, we realized a horrifying fact. We have now been out of college for as many years as we were in college. Huh?!? Yet we still feel the urge to tell people that we “recently graduated.” And our advice to graduates might go a little something like this: Stay in college as long as you possibly can.

Kidding. Of course the “real world,” while different, is wonderful in its own ways. The apartments are better, there is no homework after a grueling day, and it comes with a paycheck—however small it may be.

Honestly, we would tell grads not to stress too much about planning their life path in detail—they don’t need to know what they want to be right now. We still don’t know the answers at our ripe old age. It’s called the “Quarter-Life Crisis,” kids, and it’s very real, so don’t feel alone this fall when it suddenly hits you that the glory days are o-v-e-r.

p.s. Should you be facing a crisis of your own, all you need is chocolate. The reader who emails the most local guy friends to invite them to check out www.SeattlePicksforMen.com and CCs picks@seattlepicks.com will win two tickets to the Chocolate Box’s Tour de Chocolate. Yum!

A Delectable Treat for the Feet

We have a favorite pair of platform heels with a peep-toe that we wear every chance we get—even when they’re not the best choice. A few days ago, we wore them for a marathon shopping expedition downtown. Not only did we slip and nearly break our ankles on the slick pavement at least a dozen times, but by the end of the excursion, we limped back to our car with a dozen blisters, aching arches and toes that were verging on needing amputation.

Lucky for us, we recently stumbled across Mu Shoe—a veritable mecca of footwear that’s not only stylish, but — gasp — comfortable! There isn’t an insensible shoe to be found, with drool-worthy styles from brands like Anyi Lu and Andre Assous. We chose a red patent leather wedge from Sinela that was heaven to our bruised footsies. Plus, with their wide selection of bags from designers like Francesco Biasia, we may need to go back for a matching carry-all.

We aren’t giving up the ankle-breaking footwear, but we are definitely making smarter choices when there’s walking to be done.

A Real Gem

We often lament how hard it is to be a girl and how easy guys have it, but truth be told, being a girl is great. Especially in the warmer months. We get bright colors, flowing fabrics, fun accessories and of course, sparkly things!

This is where Peridot comes in. Three rooms of everything a girl needs to look and feel her fashionable, flirty best. It’s easy to create a whole look here: long dresses, short skirts, cute tops and sassy bottoms pair with jewelry, bags and shoes to match every ensemble. Want to look super saucy for a night out? The outfit’s here. Need a dress for a summer wedding? It’s here, too. Require a sparkly just because? Oh yeah, head on in.

Feel comfortable asking for the staff’s opinion, too, because they are knowledgeable, honest (but not brutally so) and able to guide you to your best colors and styles. For every one of us who enjoys being a girl, from our hair all the way down to our toes and everything in between, Peridot is a dream come true.

Pasta Perfection

We all daydream. It’s fun, harmless, and takes us to places we never thought possible. Whether we love our loathe our jobs, we all find ourselves envisioning ourselves in the crème de la crème of careers. Perhaps as a doctor, party planner, shoe designer—or if you love culinary delights as much as we do—the coveted job of food critic. With endless entrees and desserts all in the job description, where could we go wrong (except at our waistlines)?

The Seattle restaurant we could positively review time and time again is Pomodoro in Eastlake. Pomodoro serves up fresh Italian and Spanish dishes, offers late-night dining, and serves steaming pasta dishes that are, in a word, heavenly. From the flavorful tapas to the fresh fish and flaming peaches flambé dessert (prepared tableside of course), Pomodoro is a delectable experience.

For your next evening out, we recommend conducting a culinary review of your own. And don’t forget dessert!

Go Ahead, Make a Scene

Our thirtieth birthday party is still a few years away (phew), but when it does roll around, we intend on leaving our twenties in style with a bash not to be believed. We also plan on using party décor rental company Make a Scene to set the ambience for the extravaganza.

Specializing in décor and props for theme parties, they have everything from a 10-foot Eiffel Tower to a rickshaw and a purple velvet throne—perfect for the 30-year-old queen of the party.

The Window to Our Hearts

We love to proudly display our sweetie’s love with baubles of all kinds on our fingers, wrists and around our necks. The next best thing to a diamond on that finger? The oh-so-romantic Windows necklaces from Natha Perkins.

Our favorite reads: “I will love you forever and always” on the front, and “Beloved” on the back. It brings tears to our eyes and—we swear—we would be his forever if he ever gave us one.

Utterly Smooch-a-licious

It has happened to all of us—soul-crushing breakups. When this happens, there is usually a good period of time where we walk around scowling and hating love. For those days when love sucks, at least there is perfect lip balm, called, naturally, Love Stinks.

It’s from Beautiful Twists, a line of vegan, au-naturale lip conditioners. Flavor: He’ll never know because he will never kiss you again. Ha! Love it—and that’s one love that will never go wrong.
