Happy Independence Day, dearest readers! We hope you are going to follow up this reading of Seattle Picks with a sun-filled day of barbecues, fireworks and fun. Full disclosure from us: we actually kind of… dislike the Fourth of July. We know it sounds awful not to love your country’s Day of Independence—and we do love that about it—but for us, it’s never quite lived up to the celebration and crazy fun that it’s supposed to be.

An example of our typical Fourth of July? Once we were invited to a bash on board someone’s boat, and in preparation, we chose the perfect white cotton-eyelet shift dress, and laid out at the pool for hours the day before to get the perfect pre-tan for the event. We must have forgotten the sunscreen because we looked lobster-like, and people kept telling us we were missing the blue in our red, white and blue outfit. Hi-larious!

Experiences like that leave us feeling a little lukewarm about this particular holiday. We would much rather celebrate Independent Boutiques Day. But we will give the Fourth one last try this year—for America’s sake. At the very least, we can love having a Friday off!

Bringing Sexy Back

We are oh-so-excited that summer is finally upon us, and we’re packing our bags for a getaway weekend with the girls. Making our annual list of what made the cut for the trip, we realized we had the perfect flats, wedges, bikini, and the mandatory spray tan, but no sassy unmentionables to complete the list. Since we had already decided to pamper ourselves with the getaway, we decided the splurge should merge—right into our top drawer!

So we sauntered down to Nancy Meyer to pick up on some booty couture, as it were. We felt very Audrey Hepburn about ourselves, what with all the silk, satin and lace draped about. Our eyes kept wandering over to the “fashion over function” pieces by designers like La Perla, Nina Ricci and Cosabella. Deciding that we were totally worth it, we stocked up on some versatile undies and some summer inspired bras—plus a few frilly underpinnings just for fun.

Now if we can just figure out how to show off these pieces without getting arrested, our getaway will definitely be a success!

Top-Secret Spa

A little mystery is a good thing. A girl should never give too much away—especially in the presence of her current love interest. Like, for example, just exactly how much maintenance went into preparing for this date. Low lighting, some well-placed candles and the right colors can go a long way. Add the perfectly styled look, and the stage is set for… whatever.

Spa Noir understands all this and helps us set the scene from the very beginning by setting the perfect scene themselves. The lush, Moroccan-chic surroundings bring to mind warm nights and gentle breezes—exactly what we need to leave behind a gray day and enjoy a few hours of pampering. Don’t have a few hours? They offer express services as well, getting you in and out in under an hour. For pampering and fun, grab a girlfriend or two and check out Last Tuesday. Held on the last Tuesday of every month (natch), services are offered at discounted prices and served with champagne and chocolates.

Whatever the mood—a little lovin’, mystery, pampering, or fun with the gals—Spa Noir will keep your secret.

A Feast for the Eyes

With the wedding bug in the air, we have started to think about our own special day. Ok, we didn’t just start thinking about our big day—it has been on our mind since we were seven years old. Okay, okay—five.

And while we may not have a boyfriend at the moment, let alone a fiancé, we did just find the perfect place to take the plunge. Herban Feast, a local catering company with an emphasis on organic and sustainable food, just opened their new SoDo Park location. Herban Feast transformed an old factory from the 1900s into a beautiful event space, full of character and charm. With high ceilings and exposed beams, salvaged light fixtures and a lot of room to work with, we couldn’t help but imagine ourselves tying the knot.

We eventually snapped out of it, realizing that our lives are much more like 27 Dresses than Father of the Bride, so we took solace in their sweet-potato crab cakes. And a Thai-basil and lime martini.

Serving It Up With Style

We aspire to be the hostess with the most-est à la Martha Stewart—minus the stint in jail. Last Sunday we hosted our first family dinner and after preparing the perfect roast, we realized we had no platter to serve it up on—so not Martha Stewart-esque!

Next time we are going to be ready with a Silver Seasons Grape Leaf serving dish from Zanadia. It will pull the whole table together, and Martha (not to mention Mom) will be so proud.

Look Good in Your Groceries

We love doing our part to make the world a better place. We recycle, turn the lights off when we leave the house, and sometimes we even abide by the old adage, “If it’s yellow, let it mellow.” Seriously, people—we’re saving water!

We were having a hard time, though, remembering to bring our own bags to the grocery store. But then we found the fashion-forward, super roomy reusable totes from Gracen, and they were so pretty that we stopped forgetting.

Wearable Whimsy

We love whimsical things that spark our imagination and make us feel adorably unique. The Castle Owl rosewood and sterling silver necklace from Amy Bengston does just this. With a Mother of Pearl owl perched on a tree etched in the wood, with a castle spire in the background, our minds begin spinning fanciful daydreams of princesses, haunted woods and of course, Prince Charming. We love pieces that tell a story—even if it’s one we imagined on our own.
