Summer means a lot of things to us, but mostly it means two weeks at our family’s cabin in the woods. Every year since we were born, we have spent two weeks at the lake with the whole fam-damily. Getting ready for this holiday is summer to us.
And packing for it—now that’s a vivid memory. Throwing swimsuits, snorkels, fins, suntan lotion, fishing poles, blow-up rafts, arts and crafts projects (no televisions or phones where we were headed) and bug spray into dozens of Eddie Bauer duffel bags, piling three kids into the backseat with one big Lab sleeping at our feet—when the back of the car was piled to the ceiling it meant we were finally ready to go.
Though nothing can compare to the anticipation of spending two whole weeks at the lake, a new bauble for our jewelry box comes close—especially when it’s designed by Amy Bengston.
That’s why we’re offering you the chance to win her small Cherry Blossom necklace in silver. Just forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could be the proud owner of an Amy Bengston piece! |

This Must Be the Place
Now that summer is in full swing, (including thunderstorms?) we’re taking off for the lake! Sunglasses? Check. Sunscreen? Check. Magazines? Check. But summer clothes? Uh, not so much… We sort of forgot to plan for the one week of summer, so we’re pullin’ a Milli Vanilli and blamin’ it on the rain.
Nevertheless, we must figure out what to wear, so that’s where we went! What to Wear on Mercer Island was just the place for us to pick up on some flirty and versatile tops by Michael Stars, a couple pairs of Reef sandals, and a precious white eyelet dress from Trina Turk. It was hard to stop there, so we didn’t. We also grabbed a super-soft tee from Jack Stevens and a pair of vintage-graphic shorts by Beth Bowley.
With all the dressings chosen, we honed in on the luscious Bella Whipped Body Cream, and swiped some delicate gold drop earrings to complete the look. We could barely fit everything in our suitcase, but it hasn’t scared us off. We fully intend on making another trip to the store when fall hits… next week.

A Taste for Inspiration
Apparently we got a little too excited about the new “Inspiring Impressionism” exhibit coming to the Seattle Art Museum. This last week, we put on our saucy red beret and grabbed a friend for an afternoon of culture at SAM only to completely wear ourselves out rushing excitedly from painting to painting. By the end of our tour, we were starving.
Luckily, art isn’t the only fresh new thing happening at the museum—TASTE, its restaurant, just got a makeover. Not your standard museum cafeteria, this sweet spot features food from local farmers with a modern twist. We loved the curried cauliflower and the pork belly with horseradish mashed potatoes. They also have an extensive wine list categorized by flavor profiles (for us wine neophytes), an insanely cheap happy hour, and art-inspired cocktails like the tasty “Hammering Man.”
We finished off our meal with their house-made ice cream topped with crunchy caramel corn and thought since being cultured is so easy, we should do this more often. And next time we might event go through the other galleries too.

Antique Boutique
Passing through a bookstore the other day, we were drawn to the bright display of home-décor magazines. Flipping through the pages of designer living rooms, traditional kitchens and modern color schemes, we suddenly experienced what our husbands fear most: the urge to redecorate.
Whether you are looking to accessorize your Ikea-filled studio or add furniture to your Pottery Barn-influenced Craftsman, Apogee in Madison Valley is full of hidden treasures. Like visiting your grandmother’s attic, you’ll find large armoires and side tables covered with unique lamps, candlesticks, and other surprises. Wall sconces, chandeliers, dishes, and even vintage jewelry complete the experience. With all of the new items to be discovered every time we visit, all we need now is more square footage so we can fit all of our new treasures!
While remodeling the kitchen may not be in the current budget, you can never go wrong with paint and a few unique accessories. And after our trip to Apogee, we are quite sure one of those home-design magazines will be knocking on our door for a feature!

Cocktail of the Week! |
| |
|

Melon Swizzle
Courtesy of Sazerac
We are total girly-girls—even down to our cocktail choices. We love a fruity cocktail any day of the week (or every day of the week) and even more so in summer when the weather is hot and sunny. Naturally, the Melon Swizzle cocktail from Sazerac Restaurant is our new flirty/sweet/fruity favorite.
The Melon Swizzle:
2 oz. Mt. Gay Rum (or Bacardi Grand Melon)
1/2 oz. Falernum
2-4 dashes peach bitters
Muddled watermelon cubes
Muddle watermelon cubes in a shaker, add ingredients and ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with watermelon cubes speared or a wedge of freshly cut watermelon.

Kiss and Makeup
Our makeup obsession got a little out of hand last week when we were searching for our favorite peach lip gloss, and ran across blue eyeliner, circa 1989. It was time to clean out our stash, and when we were done, we decided to reward ourselves with super cute matching makeup bags from Bari J. The designs are vintage-inspired but with a modern flair, and there are tons of fabrics and bags to choose from. We love being girls.

A Summer Scent
Oh, how we miss the summers of our youth when there was no school, no work, no responsibility. Just the beach—day after gloriously, sunny day.
Since we are now (semi) responsible grown ups, we’ll wear At the Beach 1966 by CB I Hate Perfume instead to make us feel like it’s summer in our cubicle. The prime note is Coppertone suntan lotion, with additional scents of wet sand, driftwood, seashell and boardwalk. We feel more summery already.

It’s Easy Being Green
We are totally digging the new trend in going green. From designer reusable grocery bags to the hot stars speaking out against global warming (Leonardo DiCaprio 2.0 anyone?), we are into doing our part.
The next step is taking it to our closet, which is easy-breezy with the Mercer Island-based contemporary organic clothing line SPUN. Debuting with six basic pieces every girl needs in her closet, made in the U.S. with 100% certified organic cotton, we can all be eco-fabulous!
