life + style to you: every Friday
March 12th, 2010

We actually failed to see almost any of the movies nominated for Oscars this year, but that didn’t stop us from watching the Academy Awards—because, really at the heart of it, it’s all about the fashion, right? And before you ask, no we haven’t seen “Avatar,” and yes, we are aware we are one of probably only two people on the entire planet who can make that claim.

Usually, there are hits and misses, fashion-wise, on every Oscar red carpet, but this year, something funny happened… we loved every single gown we saw. And even if we didn’t love it and want it for our very own, we still thought everyone looked fab. The dresses were definitely statement pieces this year—big on ruffles, color, and architectural shapes —and someday we dream of being able to pick out a gown of that caliber for some occasion. Oh, to dream…

Fun-Shui

When we were little girls, we were not the fairytale-loving, frilly-tutu-wearing, tea-party-hosting kinda gals. While other girls were playing with dolls, we were skinning our knees sliding into home plate, catching tadpoles in the mud, and trying to keep up with the boys. But now that we are first-time homeowners, our feminine side is really coming out, and we just might want to host a tea party!

With sophisticated brick walls, sleek hardwood flooring and all things home décor carefully displayed on museum-like shelving and displays, we felt like we met our boutique counterpart at Far4. It’s the perfect shop for those of us who are scared of floral wallpaper but also have scheduled a moving company to remove our bf’s black leather bachelor couch. They feature all those special things that give our home that unique, cozy feeling but with a little bit of an artistic edge—think ornate glass platters, funky ceramic statues, and modern domestic wall stickers. And yes, they also have tea-party sets.

Now we just need to find a sophisticated set of stationery to get going on our invitations.

Ding Dong!

We recently got a party Evite that instructed us to be there by 8:00 sharp and ring the doorbell.  If you arrive at 8:05, you might not get in. We panicked a little, because when getting ready to go out on the town, we tend to run a little (yet very fashionably) late. So we threw on some lip gloss and made our way to the Knee High Stocking Co.

We rang the doorbell—at 7:58!—and were whisked inside by a flapper girl with a feather in her hair. The tiny space definitely had the vibe of an olde-tymey speakeasy, which is what it was modeled after.  It even has a list of “House Rules” on the menu, which includes “Don’t bring anyone here that you wouldn’t take to your Grandmother’s house for dinner” (they clearly don’t know our grandmother).  We ordered a Moscow Mule which was delish, and plan on frequenting the Knee High Stocking Co. again on our next girl’s night.

As the wise Katherine Hepburn once said, “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” We’ll cheers to that!

Pardon Our French

Shopping in France is one of our life-long dreams—obviously. Ah, to wander the streets with chic Parisians and buy fabulous luxury goods, all the while eating creams puffs and chocolate and washing it down with wine. Too bad about that thing we have here in the States that won’t give us enough time off—otherwise known as our “job.”

Luckily, we found Anne au Soleil, a market of fine French products where everything is imported from France, so buying something there is almost as good as having brought it home ourselves. Their French linens have a dainty loveliness that would add a touch of much-needed sophistication to our home, the skincare is top of the line, and since the bottles have French written on them, we can show off our good taste every time we wash and moisturize. And we have a deep amour for the handmade-by-owner chocolates, inspired from her experiences in France.

Until we can make our way to Laduree to munch on macaroons, we will celebrate the joie de vivre right here in Seattle!

Not-So-Basic Bedding

Last night we were lying in bed watching the home-shopping people pimp bed linens (don’t judge), and it hit us that there must be squillions of those items for sale. And we’re not “squillions” gals—even for something as basic as sheets.

So we went searching online and found Luxury Lab linens—shams, duvets and even pajamas are silk-screened by hand with cool designs. And the hand-dyeing means every item is unique and original. Just right for independent sleepers like ourselves.

Pretty as a Picture

We tend to eat, breathe, live and even sleep fashion. We greedily devour every dress, ensemble and accessory in every magazine, blog and store that we can find.

While searching for new art to liven up our walls recently, we stumbled upon the fashion illustrations from Prismera Design. With our insane fashion obsession, we can’t think of anything better to look at all day than these original watercolors with their bright pops of color. Loves.

Time After Time

Time is such a funny thing. On a boring day at work, you can feel like an hour’s gone by, only to glance at the clock and see it was only seven minutes. Or after a year of being single, you can feel like the breakup was just yesterday.

Something that always makes the minutes fly for us? Shopping. Our latest find incorporates the two brilliantly. The 24-karat gold necklaces from Brevity are actually a set of clock hands—delicate, unique and eternally fixed in time.
